The extensively promoted “Just Walk Out” installations in Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go locations will be removed.  As with self-checkout, consumer resistance resulted in the change in policy.  An Amazon spokesperson stated, “We have invested a lot of time redesigning a number of our Amazon Fresh stores over the last year, offering a better, overall shopping experience with more value and convenience.”  The statement continued, “We have also heard from customers that while they enjoyed the benefit of skipping the checkout line with “Just Walk Out”, they wanted the ability to easily find products and deals and view their receipt as they shop.”

Amazon will continue to sell the technology to third party users and will retain the systems in Amazon Go stores in the U.K. Amazon.

Dash carts with electronic features that allow customers to monitor purchases and to skip the checkout line will be retained.
