WTO Concerned over Global Trade Decline

02/25/2019

The World Trade Organization Quarterly Outlook Indicator dropped from 98.6 in November to 96.3 in February, the lowest reading since March 2010.

The lower value is consistent with a warning issued in September that global trade growth would slow in 2019 based on international trade tensions and other economic issues.

The WTO Quarterly Outlook Indicator is based on a combination of trade volume during the previous quarter, export orders, airfreight and container-port throughput and agricultural products. Despite port throughput remaining high, downturns in airfreight, export orders, automobiles, and agricultural raw materials contributed to the decline in the index.
