SE on Organic Farm in Australia Responsible for Recall

04/25/2019

Traceback from cases of salmonellosis among consumers in Australia caused by Salmonella Enteritidis have led to a recall of organic eggs produced by Synergy Produce.  This case is separate from previous detections on farms in New South Wales and Victoria extending from September 2018 onwards.

Although the industry association representing egg producers in Australia maintain that the infection is not endemic, the frequency of outbreaks suggest the need for a comprehensive quality assurance program such as those in operation in the U.S. since the mid-1970’s and the British Lion scheme in the U.K.  By mandating frequent assay of flocks and diverting eggs from flocks or farms colonized with SE to pasteurization, it should be possible to diminish or to ultimately eliminate outbreaks of SE infection among consumers.

It is possible that adoption of free-range housing in Australia has contributed to persistence infection in the environment of flocks, complicating control and eliminating the possibility of eradication under free-range systems.
