GM Corn Successful in Resisting Army Worm Infestation in South Africa

Jannie de Villiers, CEO of Grain SA ascribes the relatively light losses due to an infestation of Army Worm caterpillars to the fact that most of the crop was planted to GM varieties producing BT.

In contrast, neighboring countries such as Zambia and Zimbabwe whose government chose to ban GM corn suffered extensive losses.

The periodic mass proliferation of the pest occurs following drought induced by the El Nino which devastated southern African nations in 2015 and 2016

Jannie de Villiers stated, “Currently as we look at the crop we cannot call it a disaster mainly because of the GMOs and our ability to protect our crops through commercial agriculture.”
