DSM AND EVONIK ESTABLISH JV TO PRODUCE OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

Royal DSM and Evonik will form a joint venture to manufacture Omega-3 fatty acid products from marine algae.

The commercial-scale production facility will be erected in the United States and is projected to be operational in 2019 and will require an investment of $200 million.

Initially the production will be destined for salmon aquaculture but it is possible that DHA will be available for other species.

The venture termed “Veramaris” will obviate the need to extract oil from wild-caught fish, a declining resource.

Currently the fat-fish industry which is primarily directed to the production of salmon uses 75 percent of the World’s production of fish oil which totals one million metric tons annually.
