Predictions of Corn and Soybean Acreage

Bryce Knorr

Bryce Knorr of Penton Ag’s Farm Futures has projected corn acreage to be planted for the 2017 season at 90.3 million acres.

This is a 3.9 percent decline over the USDA estimate for 2016.  It is projected that 89 million acres will be planted to soybeans representing a 6.6 percent increase over the USDA 2016 estimate.

The differential reflects the beneficial margin for soybeans over corn at prevailing and futures prices.  Penton Ag’s Farm Futures estimates current corn stocks at 8.55 billion bushels and soybeans at 1.70 billion bushels.

The projections will be confirmed in the USDA Intentions to Plant and also the April 2017 World Agriculture and Supply Demand estimates to be published mid-month.
