Twinpack Promote Eggs CargoSystem® in the U.S.

May 28, 2015

Twinpack of Holland is actively promoting their Eggs CargoSystem® (ECS) in the U.S. after successful adoption in 30 nations with 50 million trays delivered over 15 years.  It is intuitive that inadequately cleaned metal egg racks, plywood spacers and plastic trays are capable of transmitting viral and bacterial infection. The present concern over dissemination of H5H2 avian influenza virus through shipping nest-run product is self evident.

Twin pack was founded in 1945 in Barneveld, the Netherlands, then a major center of the pre-war egg production and marketing industry.  The company was established to manufacture wooden boxes for table eggs and for the cut-flower industry.

The EggsCargoSystem® was introduced in 2000 as it was recognized that existing metal racks and fiber trays were difficult to maintain and could not be adequately decontaminated.  As the World’s largest egg-packing equipment manufacturer was also located near Barneveld, MOBA and Twin pack have cooperated to develop compatible systems with respect to mechanical and robotic handling, transport and decontamination.

The system comprises:-

  • Plastic trays are available in a wide range of colors to allow visual coding to farm of origin. Trays are fabricated from virgin plastic material
  • Dividers with grooves allows interlocking of stacked trays to provide for secure transportation
  • Solid plastic pallets are reinforced with steel

Based on the needs of packers in the EU, Twinpack has progressively upgraded and modified their system with improved plastic materials and design. Recent innovations include:-

  • Incorporation of a biocide (TP2) in the plastic to inactivate bacteria which produce a biofilm which complicates decontamination.
  •  Design changes which allow thorough drainage of water after disinfection and rinsing.
  • The plastic used in the EGGS Cargo System® pallets now resists ultraviolet light.
  • Microchip RFD transmitters have been added to ID pallets and to trace and control inventory

In evaluating the purchase of advanced transport systems for eggs, initial capital cost should be viewed against operational life.  Twinpack considers that the operating life of the Eggs Cargo System® will exceed 15 years with acceptable handling.

MOBA and Kuhl washing equipment is available for the Eggs CargoSystem®.
