Generally, agricultural organizations are in favor of the confirmation of Sonny Perdue as the next Secretary of the USDA.
His candidacy is supported the National Corn Growers Association, National Chicken Council and the American Forest Foundation. This is based on his record as a veterinarian, agribusiness owner and Governor of Georgia.
The water restrictions he imposed during a drought in Georgia in 2007 and his “cultural conservation” are considered aggressive.
He has however commented in articles questioning global warming noted in a National Review article that “liberals lose all creditability when it comes to climate science because their arguments becomes so ridiculous and so obviously disconnected with reality.”
He has come under criticism from environmentalists including the Center for Biological Diversity who maintain that the Secretary of Agriculture should “understand intrinsic values not someone who simply sees things in terms of commodities and profit.”
It is anticipated that Perdue will be confirmed following a successful hearing before the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.
