AI Isolated from Wild Ducks in Kentucky

Mar 17, 2017

The Kentucky Poultry Federation has reported that isolates obtained during routine surveillance of mallards (Anas platyrhyncos) and American black ducks (Anas rubripes) in Ballard County KY. on March 2nd were confirmed as H7 strain.

The neuraminidase serotype and pathogenicity have yet to be determined. The prevalence rate was not disclosed in the report.

The significance of this finding is that migratory waterfowl are carrying avian influenza virus as we move into Spring. Accordingly every effort must be made to rectify deficiencies in structural and operational biosecurity to interdict possible transmission to commercial poultry flocks.
